Women in Industrial Design

2022 AGENCY WORK

While working at Sprout Studios I was able to be a part of an initiative to discuss the gender gap in the industrial design space. We gained insight by interviewing 12 different women in the industry, from Founders and CEOs to educators and young professionals. These interviews were shared online and developed into a 100 page book.

IDENTITY

The ‘W’ mark was adapted from a typeface and altered to include a space in the letter form, signifying the gender gap. Though there is a gap, there is a forward trajectory to the letterform that signifies the effort to make a significant change.

In developing the identity, it felt important to choose a color palette that was bold and vibrant without shying away from femininity. The idea was to embrace femininity as powerful and commanding.

PUBLICATION

Over the course of about a year, the Sprout team virtually sat down with 12 different women to talk about their experiences and insights in the industrial design industry. These interviews were then transcribed and laid out with images of each woman’s work woven in to create the meat of the book. In addition to the interviews, we finished off the book with gender gap statistics and some overall takeaways based on the conversations we had.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Each interview was released online in the form of a blog post, and with that came social media assets. We wanted to showcase the women and their achievements as well as share a quote from the interview that captured an important takeaway from the conversation we had with them.

LAUNCH PARTY

On March 8 of 2023, Sprout Studios hosted an event to celebrate and promote the launch of the book. One book was given to each of the over 150 attendees and also made available to order online for the cost of shipping.

The event featured a panel of 6 of the 12 women we interviewed where we continued the discussion with an audience both in-person and online. This event was held in a large 4,000 sq. ft. space where numerous collateral materials were needed to liven up the event.

PROCESS

In order to make this content available to as many people as possible, Sprout reached out to several contacts for sponsorship. Shawmut Communications Group, a long-time printing partner, provided generous support for the printing of the book and allowed us to come on-site to view their facility and look at print proofs.
